Reinforcement is the engine that drives all action, and also the trainer’s most important tool.
Do as follows:
Stage 1: Test the reinforcement
Give your dog one of the treats that act as rewards, and examine if he likes it? Does your dog want more? A lot? What about the toy – does it work? If you let your dog play with it, does he give it back to you?
Stage 2: Try different kinds of reinforcement
Try different treats, different flavors and textures; crunchy treats and treats that are eaten quickly. Also try different kinds of play and toys. With different kinds of reinforcement, you can later adjust the intensity with which your dog performs different tasks you train him to do.
